About Kim Marshall

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the CRPO (# 006694). I hold a Master of Arts Degree in Counselling Psychology. I have advanced training in Internal Family Systems therapy, trauma therapy, and in treating Anxiety and Depression.

I draw from many therapeutic modalities to create an individualized treatment plan suited to each client. One of my main approaches is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, which can help you increase awareness and understanding of your internal experience, the history that has shaped it, and the related coping strategies, feelings, reactions, and behaviours that may no longer be helpful. Through this you can shift how you feel towards yourself and others to create a more balanced, intentional, compassionate and meaningful internal and external life. Learn more about IFS here.

I also incorporate, and have training in, CBT, DBT, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Emotion-Focused Individual Therapy, Interpersonal therapy, Attachment-focused therapy, and Polyvagal theory, and always work from a trauma- informed perspective.

I assist with attachment issues, anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, grief and loss, self-esteem, relationship challenges and difficult transitional life transitions.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and my dogs, hiking, travel and photography.

My Approach

My approach is integrative, holistic, and trauma-informed. I incorporate our understanding of how the mind, body and emotions work together. I work with your thoughts, feelings, and nervous system to help you heal and grow, in ways that are most comfortable and helpful for you.

Together we will uncover your needs, strengths and abilities, and use them to guide your process of healing, change and growth, working at a pace that is comfortable for you. I value the unique experiences, perspectives and needs that each client brings, and provide a safe, supportive space for exploration.

Through your therapy, we can work to heal past and present pain, improve your relationships with yourself and others, and grow self-understanding and self- compassion. Our work can help you experience and manage difficult emotions, set helpful boundaries, gain new perspectives, change how you relate to yourself and others and create space for a life in which you can flourish.

FAQs

Common Questions and Concerns

Not at all. I strongly believe that asking for help is a sign of real strength. We all need help sometimes. Asking for it shows you believe you can grow, heal and change, and that you have the courage to try..

As a psychotherapist, I have been professionally trained to help you approach your situation in a new way – to listen with care and without judgment, to help you listen to yourself so you understand why you are feeling what you are feeling, to teach you new skills, and to help you adopt different perspectives.

As your therapist I help you build on the strengths you already possess and together we work to identify the root of what is causing you distress. I don’t give advice or opinions, like a friend. I help you find your own solutions, using evidence-based approaches to treatment that lead to lasting change.

Finally, therapy is completely confidential.

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. Sometimes I will ask questions, sometimes you will share your thoughts and feelings and we will discuss them. Other times we may practice new skills.

Unfortunately, this is not a question that can be answered in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success. Some things that help the process along include booking regular sessions and showing up on time; following through by practicing skills between session; and communicating regularly with me about what is working and what is not.

I will not judge you. I can even help you reduce some of your own self-judgment if this is where you struggle.

Therapy involves personal issues, some of which are easier to discuss than others. It is natural to fear judgment or feel nervous about discussing them. I bring a compassionate and sensitive perspective, and I help clients build self-compassion. Many clients are relieved after opening up in therapy. However, it’s important you know that we go at a pace that you set. You get to decide what to share and how much, and when you share it – my job is to make you feel safe to do so, if you wish to do so..
